No. The Current is a learning environment. We welcome students at all experience levels, whether you have written for years or are publishing your first story. What matters most is curiosity, commitment, and willingness to learn.
Absolutely. A publication is built by more than writers. We need students interested in photography, design, video, audio production, research, social media, technology, illustration. Every role contributes to telling a complete story.
The commitment depends on your role. Contributors may complete individual assignments throughout the semester, while staff members and editors take on additional responsibilities in planning, editing, and managing their desks. We understand students have academic commitments, and our goal is to create a newsroom experience that is challenging, rewarding, and manageable.
During the Fellowship Programme, students will select a primary area of interest so they can receive focused training and mentorship. However, The Current values collaboration, and contributors may work with other desks when their skills or a project requires it.
Yes. The Current is designed to develop future journalists and media leaders. Students who demonstrate strong editorial judgment, reliability, creativity, and commitment may progress into contributor, staff, and editorial leadership positions.
The Current is currently a student-led publication. Opportunities for compensation, scholarships, internships, and professional development partnerships may be developed as the publication grows.
