The UCC Current is the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean’s first independent, student-led publication. It exists to give UCC students a space to grow in journalism, storytelling, media and the arts, while creating a platform through which the wider UCC community can stay informed, connected and recognized.
To turn writers into storytellers, aspiring artists into contributors, and everyday UCC students into voices with a platform to be recognized by the wider university community.
The story of The UCC Current began with the revival of the UCC Media Club in 2023 by Sachiel Thompson. Following her departure a year later, the club was taken up by Reyna Taylor, who served as President, and Kayla Landells, who served as Vice President and Creative Director. Together, they began building a stronger foundation for student media at UCC, holding frequent discussions and meetings through WhatsApp channels alongside a wider Executive team. What began as conversations about writing, journalism and student expression eventually became a desire to create something more lasting.
In late 2025, that vision took another step forward with the creation of The UCC Review, a small digital platform hosted on Medium where articles were published as stories became available. While modest in its beginnings, The UCC Review became the foundation for something much larger.
In the summer of 2026, Kayla Landells pioneered the next stage of that vision: the creation of The UCC Current, an official student publication designed to transform the way student media operates at UCC. The goal was not simply to publish articles, but to build a system that could turn writers into storytellers, aspiring artists into contributors, and everyday UCC students into voices with a platform to be recognized by the wider university community.

The Media Club is revived
Sachiel Thompson revives the UCC Media Club, creating the first space for students interested in journalism and media to gather.
2024
A stronger foundation
Reyna Taylor takes over as President with Kayla Landells as Vice President and Creative Director. Alongside a wider Executive team, they begin building a real foundation for student media at UCC.
2025
The UCC Review
A small digital platform hosted on Medium, publishing articles as stories became available. Modest in its beginnings, but the foundation for something much larger.
2026

Kayla Landells pioneers an official student publication designed to transform how student media operates at UCC — not simply to publish articles, but to build a system that turns writers into storytellers.
Today, The UCC Current is being built by a small but ambitious group. Together, they hope to establish a publication that is bigger than any one executive team or generation of students — one that can continue to exist, evolve and inspire for decades to come.
The UCC Current is ultimately about people and their stories. It is a place to learn, create, question, document and contribute. Whether through journalism, photography, design, video, interviews, opinion or art, every contributor has the opportunity to leave something behind.
What begins as a small student publication has the potential to become an unforgettable part of the UCC experience — built by students, for students, and remembered by generations to come.
