UCC Culture Club President, Tajay McDurmoth, Vice President, Roshane Gordon and Model Coach Raquel Chin.

The UCC Culture Club held their first Casting Call on October 9, 2026. With their president and Vice President, Tajay McDurmoth and Roshane Gordon, leading the charge in an eventful and well-received bundle of talent, the culture club prepares for its upcoming production. In attendance was the model coach and pageant contestant Raquel Chin, who helped judge during the casting calls.

There were visible nerves from the members who joined in the small room on the second floor of the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean main campus. Some had come with the script; others had noticeably practised ahead of time, delivering heartwarming and humorous performances based on the characters that Taj McDurmoth had written himself.

The club initially prepared to enter the annual Tallawah competition with elaborate pieces. However, the criteria for the competition had left them with their own production to build. The story and life of Taj’s characters seemed to live off the page as members sang and monologued their hearts out. A memorable moment on the first casting call was JoHanna Walker, who sang a small rendition of “A Million Dreams”, leaving the room stunned.

One performance that brought the room and its actor to tears was the one of Giordane Robertson with his monologue of I Said No. Overall the performances were unmistakably evidence of the overwhelming talent that sat within the walls of UCC. Some students travelled from the regional campuses to be there that day, showing the family that has been created by the Culture Club was creating a fruitful atmosphere. It was a very joyous space, one that made members hopeful to be a part of this production either on or off stage.

When Tajay McDurmoth, the Director was asked about the experience, this is what he had to say: “The Culture Club is now growing. We had a great turnout for our two casting calls.” Regarding the play he stated, “It’s going to be a good one. It’s going to be toxic. It’s going to be fruitful and it’s going to be chaotic.” He advises that UCC students begin to save some funds for what’s coming next.

At this stage, the Culture Club has selected their final cast as the script narrows down it’s final edits.
